About
I'm Dorian Portillo, a software developer at the FAIR Data Innovations Hub, a division of the California Medical Innovations Institute. I build open-source tools for research software, biomedical data infrastructure, FAIR metadata, and practical automation for scientists.
Most of my work lives in the space between software engineering and scientific knowledge sharing. I've worked on GitHub Apps for FAIR software compliance, Nuxt/Vue platforms for scientific poster publishing, Python pipelines for metadata extraction with large language models, and Electron desktop applications for biomedical data curation. The common thread is making research outputs easier to publish, cite, validate, discover, and reuse.
I care about software that is useful, but also thoughtful. My technical background spans Vue/Nuxt, React, TypeScript, Python, Electron, Flask, GitHub automation, Docker, deployment pipelines, metadata standards, documentation, and open-source maintenance. I like building tools that feel clean, intentional, and human enough that people actually want to use them.
Outside of work, I'm drawn to music, film, writing, journaling, poetry, lyric writing, creative coding, and experimental software projects. Art matters to me because it interrupts the loop of routine, passive consumption, and algorithmic living. It gives people a way to process emotion, make meaning, and turn inner life into something tangible.
My taste is shaped by shoegaze, hyperpop, sci-fi, anime, postmodernism, punk values, internet artifacts, cyber/dark/warm aesthetics, and books about technology, consciousness, identity, and what it means to be human. I'm drawn to digital experiences with personality: polished interfaces, personal dashboards, useful tools, and software that has actual taste.
I grew up around San Bernardino, and that shaped how I think about community, education, opportunity, and place. I care about local art, local businesses, open science, FAIR data, self-hosting, digital privacy, and technology that gives people more agency instead of extracting from them.
I'm always trying to redesign my life in small ways: becoming healthier, more disciplined, more emotionally grounded, more creative, and less passive about what I consume. I value kindness, authenticity, freedom, and the tension between being technically capable and still staying expressive, warm, and human.
